Fishing Seasons: The Florida – Bahamas Run

The great thing about Florida is, there’s always good fishing! On the East Coast we are blessed with the warm Gulf Stream waters which bring an exciting variety of fish to our shores all year round.

As a special bonus in the West Palm Beach – Jupiter – Stuart area, the Bahamas are just a few hours away. So you can combine fantastic fishing in Florida and the Bahamas in a few days. Plan your trip with 4-5 days for fishing, that way your experienced captain can take the best advantage of seas and fish for a truly memorable fishing vacation adventure.

You can keep the trip short and just head for the closest harbor in West End, or plan in that extra day or two and explore the Abacos.

Budget your trip at about $800 per full day of fishing and boat travel + $120-$150 per night double hotel accommodation, depending on your preference of hotel.

The winter season is billfish time: get ready for some fighting sport fishing. Sailfish and marlin are favorites in January and February. The weather in March can make it tricky for a crossing from Florida to the Bahamas with calm seas. If you’re going in March, look for a larger boat; say upwards of 45’ to make the crossing easier.

In May and June the good eating fish are running. For example, we’re big fans of kingfish and amberjack, both delicious.

Kingfish_3

The Atlantic stock kingfish schools in April and May. Kingfish are year-round residents of the Treasure Coast (Stuart, Florida), but April is the top month to catch smoker kingfish as they travel south along the coast. Although the average spring kingfish runs 12 to 20 pounds, fish of 50 pounds or more are caught every year by anglers trolling live bait or large mullet-shaped plugs.

Amberjack_1 Amberjack (AJ), lesser known and very tasty, put up a great struggle. They may run in schools, at an average weight of 8 lbs, but they can grow to an enormous size of 100 lbs, and these big boys are generally loners. These fish are good fighters and will try every wrenching trick in the book to get off your hook.
