You're hoping your child will read more books. I sympathize. I remember when my son stopped reading for pleasure.
In sixth grade he had a class called DEAR, which stood for Drop Everything and Read. He was allowed to bring in a magazine or a book for Reading Counts--a system in which they took quizzes on books to accumulate a required minimum of points. The carrot-and-stick method worked while it lasted. In seventh grade he and I read the last Harry Potter, in his case, only because he wanted to finish the series. But in eighth grade he had no incentives, other than escaping my nagging, and never picked up a book. Since my husband and I are both enthusiastic readers, I assumed this was a phase to be endured, like teething.
As homework, sports, and socializing filled more of his time, his standardized test scores in reading fell, forcing him to take Intensive Reading in ninth grade. Still a high-achiever, his schedule consisted of all honors classes, Engineering, and a remedial class in reading. Humiliating. Reading is important, even for smart kids. Still, finding books for kids at this age can be tough. Not loving wizards or mythology? The library can seem too small.
Finn's Books feature kids into soccer and skateboarding, basketball and building things. Their adventures take them on trains across Europe, stowing away on a cruise ship, kart racing in Monaco, and even to outer space. Reading these books is about hanging out and laughing with Finn and his friends. Finn's not the coolest kid in school, but he's having fun, even after facing the school bully, the prettiest girl, or the toughest villain. He conquers the challenges of growing up and own his own fears.
In Book #2, Finn and his friends must build and race the fastest, hybrid-technology racing kart in the world! They travel to the Monaco Grand Prix to compete against teen drivers from around the world. What better way to impress the girls?
Among the luxury yachts and glittering casinos of Monte Carlo, Finn learns that competition isn't confined to the soccer field. Is Finn willing to win at any cost?
